Symptoms

Learn what to do if a black screen appears when installing Microsoft Windows 7 on an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) using Boot Camp.
This can happen because the Windows 7 installer does not include the necessary graphics or Bluetooth drivers for this Mac.

Products Affected

Boot Camp, Windows 7, iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)

Resolution

Download the Windows 7 Installation Enabler
(linked below) which contains the required drivers, copy them to a
MS-DOS-formatted USB storage device, then install Windows 7. Follow
these steps:

  1. Go to the bottom of this page and click Software License Agreement to agree to the license.
  2. On next screen, scroll to the bottom of the page, then click Accept and Download if you accept the terms.
  3. If you are upgrading from Windows Vista, you'll need to use the Apple_Win7_Upgrade_Utility before starting an upgrade install.
  4. The files are contained in a .zip file. Double click it to expand it.
  5. Connect your USB storage device.
  6. If
the USB device has not been formatted as MS-DOS (FAT), or if you're not
sure, follow steps A through M immediately below; otherwise go to step
    7.

    Important
: These steps will erase the contents of the USB storage device; back up any important files that are on it to a different disk.

    1. From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
    2. Open Disk Utility.
    3. Select the USB drive in the left side of the Disk Utility window.
    4. Click the Paritions tab.
    5. Click Options.
    6. Click the "Master Boot Record" radio button.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click the Format tab.
    9. Select MS-DOS (FAT).
    10. Name the disk MBRFAT
    11. Click Apply.
    12. Click Partition.
    13. When the process is complete, quit Disk Utility.

    </li>
  7. Locate the "Windows7_Installation_Enabler" that was created when you expanded the .zip file in step 3.
  8. Drag "Drivers" and "AutoUnattended.xml" to the USB device's icon to copy the files to it. Do not copy them to any subfolders.
  9. Start the Boot Camp Assistant.
  10. Select a partition size and click Partition.
  11. After
partitioning has completed, click Start the installation and insert
your Windows 7 install DVD. Your computer will restart.
  12. Follow
the onscreen Windows install instructions. If this is a new
installation, remember to use the Windows installer to format the
BOOTCAMP partition--you'll need to click on Drive Options (Advanced) to
    see a Format selection.
  13. Your computer will restart
several times during the installation process. The screen may go black
for several minutes while the Windows installer locates the drivers on
your USB storage device. You should not turn off your computer during
    this process.
  14. A screen should eventually appear asking you to establish a user account in Windows 7.

If the screen remains black after several minutes, power it off (hold
the power button for several seconds), then go back to step 6. Ensure
that your USB device is formatted as Master Boot Record, FAT, and that
AutoUnattend.xml and drivers are on the root level of the directory.
